Zoo Authority of Tamil Nadu 

The Tamil Nadu Government in the G.O. Ms. No. 314 dated 03/12/2004 has  accepted the proposal for the constitution of the Zoo Authority of Tamil Nadu under the  Societies Registration Act, 1975 (Tamil Nadu Act 27 of 1975) for better management of  the Arignar Anna Zoological Park and for expeditious utilization of the funds released by  the Central Zoo Authority. As per this order, the Director, Arignar Anna Zoological Park  will be the Member Secretary and the Governing board will consist of the following  members, namely:-

The Secretary to Government,
Environment and Forest Department.
  Chairman.
The Secretary to Government,
Finance Department.
  Member.
The Secretary to Government,
Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department.
  Member.
The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests,
Tamilnadu.
  Member.
Vice–Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Veterinary &
Animal Sciences University.
  Member.
Director,Department of Environment.   Member.
Commissioner, Tourism Department.   Member.
Chief Wildlife Warden,Tamil Nadu.   Member.

The objectives of the authority are:

  • To develop and maintain Arignar Anna Zoological Park,Vandalur and Children’s Park, Guindy in a self sustaining manner by receiving and utilizing funds from Central/State Government and other Government undertakings for the development of the zoo and Children’s Park ;
  • To create understanding and awareness about the rich faunal diversity among the visitors of the zoo, students and common public outside the zoo through zoo education and interpretation programme ;
  • To undertake research on various aspects of wild animals including captive breeding of species ;
  • To procure such animals as are required for the enrichment of the zoo by purchase or exchange from other states in India or from abroad and to receive animals in gift ;
  • To function as the apex technical advisory body for the other zoos in Tamil Nadu and to help in animal collection and exchange programme of the zoos.

The programme and activities of the authority will be

  • Implementing the development plans and schemes as well as the maintenance works approved by Central/ State/ Central Zoo Authority / Governing Board in the Arignar Anna Zoological Park,Vandalur and the Children’s Park , Guindy;
  • Developing the zoo into a premier zoo of the country by innovative designing of the enclosures, improving the visitor amenities and providing conservation education and research facilities;
  • Paying out the funds belonging to the Zoo Authority, and all expenses that are incidental to the formation of the Zoo Authority, its management and administration ;
  • Receiving donations from persons / institutions either in India or abroad and all proceeds realized by way of entry fee and other incomes derived by the zoo and the Children’s Park and utilizing them for the management and development of the zoo as well as Children’s Park.
  • The Zoo Authority of the Tamilnadu has been registered and has commenced functioning from 1st April 2005.
